HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE PERFECT BOTTLE FOR YOUR CHILD?

Whether for bottle feeding from birth or for switching from breastfeeding to the bottle - it is not always easy to find your way around the extensive range and to choose the ideal bottle. Which criteria have to be considered? What questions should you ask yourself in order to make the right choice? We'll explain all of that here.

Baby bottle: the right choice is important
When the baby arrives, we only want one thing: to give him the best we can so that he can grow and thrive in ideal conditions. And the bottle is not unimportant, because you will feed the newborn with it day and night. The correct digestion of the milk depends on it, it enables the child to suckle easily without swallowing too much air and allows the milk to flow at the right speed. So which bottle should you choose?

Glass or plastic?

The bottles currently available on the market are either made of glass or plastic. What are their advantages and disadvantages?

Glass baby bottles: Glass inspires confidence because it is a neutral material with a simple and natural composition (the main ingredient is sand). It holds heat well, is easy to clean and sterilize, and won't change over time. It does not release any chemicals that could get into the milk and is odorless and tasteless. It is an ideal choice for the first few weeks, especially for more sensitive premature babies. However, once the child begins to want to hold the bottle on their own, it is better to replace it, since its main disadvantage is that it is easy to break. baby bottle warmer

Baby bottles made of plastic: These days these are made of polypropylene (PP) and without bisphenol A (banned since 2010). Lightweight, unbreakable baby bottles made of PP are easy to take anywhere and are ideal for a baby who can drink alone. However, they keep the selected temperature of the milk shorter and wear out quickly. Overheating should be avoided and the baby bottle should be discarded as soon as it cracks.

Baby bottle: which teat?
The bottle is one thing, but the choice of teat is just as important. There are many options here too. The materials available are latex and silicone.

Latex teats: They have proven themselves over decades. They are resilient and very flexible, but they have a very strong taste and odor that can make babies uncomfortable, especially if they have been breastfed beforehand.

Silicone teats: They are stiffer and less suitable for babies who are a bit “lazy”, but they have the advantage that they are transparent (which makes it possible to control the correct flow of milk) and odorless (ideal for attaching to the baby to get used to the real taste of drinks).

The teats come in many different shapes. The most classic ones are round, while others are flattened to encourage the baby to suckle naturally, as similar as possible to breastfeeding. Some are narrow, others wide, so that compatibility with the drinking bottle is important. Many suction cups offer the option of receiving three different flow rates depending on the orientation. This is very useful when the baby is growing and drinking faster, but also for liquids of different thicknesses.

Did you know already?

In the Middle Ages, babies were rarely not breastfed. If necessary, they were fed with spoons or small cups ... or with cow horns! These were cleaned and sometimes fitted with a teat made of leather, fabric or even teats from cows and used in some regions until the 19th century.

Baby bottle: different shapes depending on the age of the child
The shapes of the bottles have also changed over time. Classic "straight" bottles, cylindrical or triangular shapes are perfect for all ages. For babies who frequently suffer from colic, the bottles, which are angled at 30 °, prevent air from being swallowed by always filling the teat with milk. They sometimes have a removable bottom to make cleaning easier, but this remains difficult. There are also study bottles that babies can use to learn to drink from glasses and cups. They have handles so that babies can hold them more easily.

The different sizes
From the “micro bottle” with 30 ml to the large bottle with 350 ml, there are models for all situations and all ages. The smaller ones can be useful for giving a diluted medication or giving the infant a few sips of water or fruit juice on hot days or for the first few days in the maternity ward. Conventional bottles usually have a capacity of more or less 250 ml. They are perfect for up to 9 months of age and can be used from birth, as they are usually precisely graduated. As the baby grows and starts drinking soups or large amounts of milk, a 350 ml bottle can come in handy.

Three points to remember about baby bottles:

The baby bottle: Glass is good in the first few weeks, then plastic is safer to avoid breaking the bottle.
The teat: latex is easier for a lazy baby, while odorless silicone is suitable for a little gourmet.
The shape: Here you should pay attention to the practical side so that the bottle can be cleaned quickly and perfectly.
