South Korea's 2020 newborns drop 10% year-on-year to a new low

According to Yonhap News Agency, the "Birth Statistics for 2020 (Final Edition)" released by the Korea Statistics Agency on the 25th showed that in 2020, the number of new births in South Korea was 272,300, a year-on-year decrease of 10%. This is the first time that South Korea’s annual birth population has fallen below 300,000, a decrease of half from 2001 (559,900).

South Korea’s annual number of newborns fell below 400,000 for the first time in 2017, and fell below 300,000 for the first time in three years. The crude birth rate in 2020 is 5.3‰, which is also the lowest in history. The total fertility rate (Total Fertility Rate) is 0.84, which is the lowest value since the start of statistics.

From the perspective of the age of women giving birth, the birth rate is the highest at the age of 30-34, 78.9 per 1,000 births, 42.3 at the age of 35-39, 30.6 at the age of 25-29, 7.1 at the age of 40-44, and 20-24. The age is 6.2. The average age of women at childbirth is 33.1 years old, and 33.8% of them are pregnant women over 35 years old. The average age of newborn fathers is 35.8 years old, an increase of 0.1 years from 2019.

The sex ratio of newborns was 104.8, which was in the normal range (103~107). The sex ratio, which was as high as 110 in the 1990s, declined in the 2000s, returned to normal in 2007 (106.2), and then continued to decline.
